    Help: One high EGT

Thanks everyone. I feel like I ruled out air-fuel issues. All cylinders still peak at the same mixture setting, EGT just peaks 150?F higher than the others when it used to be the same. It doesn't appear to be running leaner unless I'm missing something. To be clear- this cylinder was replaced...

    Help: One high EGT

Background: Superior IO-360. 1500 TTSN. Cyl 3 replaced 25 hours ago. Standard slick mags, R&R'd for SB about 10 hours before flight. Flew outbound for lunch. All EGT's normal, balanced within 20 degrees. Landed, had lunch. Normal run up.Took off, and on climb out, EGT 3 is immediatley 150...

Possible AD for certain NAVWORX ADS-B Units

The FAR says you must meet the requirements of the TSO. The Navworx box actually had a TSO-A, which means the FAA was actually stating that it meets the TSO, not just the manufacturer. The original TSO was for a GPS with a SIL of 0. The FAA found that a software change made this a SIL of 3, as a...

No "BOTH" positions allowed on RV's

Yes, but given the fuel design of the Sportsman, you can drain one tank completely dry and it will still pull from the other one unless your pressure imbalance is about 1.5 PSI or more, which is darn near impossible to achieve in a sub 150 knot airplane ;) So the left-right selector is for the...

    WAAS GPS for IFR Approaches

The background here comes from the AIM, and it's pretty straightforward: So, it's not WAAS that you need, which is a technology that is in the cheapest devices today. It's an actual TSO. Not meets the requirements of a TSO, but an actual TSO approval. This is what drives all the cost and makes...

Radar Altimeter Functionality for < $200

Has anyone calculated the max ground speed vs altitude and altitude vs pitch rate that this could track? If it fires a laser spot at the ground, then there is some altitude and speed at which it will out-fly the return signal. This is the main reason any sound based system doesn't work except...

Possible AD for certain NAVWORX ADS-B Units

If the aircraft has ever transmitted ADS-B OUT before, it is not eligible for the rebate. Doesn't matter if the previous ADS-B was compliant or not, certified or not.

    Navworx , back in business?

The FAA changed the traffic system to need SIL > 0 to send traffic instead of any SIL. Not "certified," not "compliant" which would be a SIL of 3. Just not zero. If Navworx had changed their software from SIL=0 to SIL=1 this wouldn't have been an issue. They instead went to SIL=3 (full...

Two receivers from one GPS antenna?

Unfortunately, ADS-B OUT is not experimental. These are signals sent out which are used to manage the national airspace system, not just your airplane. Things get different when that's true and the category of the aircraft doesn't matter. It's not legal to fly into 2020 airspace unless you...

Two receivers from one GPS antenna?

The answer to this one is easy. Does the Appareo ADS-B install manual say you can split the antenna wire and share it? If not, you can't, even if it would technically work. The FAA expects us to follow the manufacturer's instructions when installing ADS-B. If you don't, demonstrating ADS-B...

    Sniffle valve for water too?

You get a bunch of water in your oil all the time due to condensation and blowby when you shut down. As long as your oil temps hit 180F or higher when flying, this will just boil off. So unless your dipstick reads 2 quarts high because you have so much water, it's not an issue.

Possible AD for certain NAVWORX ADS-B Units

A drone cannot use a non-compliant ADS-B OUT device to fly in 2020 airspace. The FAA encourages drones to equip with advisory only GPS position sources when flying in places where ADS-B is not required at all. They do the same for all aircraft in non-2020 airspace, and in fact there is a TSO for...

    Circuit Board Mounting

Silicone and other adhesives are used to mount and stabilize electronics all the time. Most cell phones today are stuck together with adhesives, not screwed together. One of the ways to make something as environmentally robust as possible is to just bury it in epoxy or silicone. Silicone is nice...

A friendly reminder on ADS-B install

Maybe I am misunderstanding, but you have exactly that option. ADS-B is only required if you want to fly in ADS-B airspaces. You can fly in the vast majority of the USA without ADS-B (or a transponder). There is no requirement for enroute ADS-B below 10K'.

    Prop Efficiency

#2. There's no way any reasonable prop will change efficiency enough to make up for the fact that your engine power has changed by 23%. Your real problem will be absorbing 260 HP at 1400 RPM.

windscreen film - bird strike protection

Notice how the bullet does go through it, but the 20 MPH foot or pipe doesn't? Without testing, I wouldn't assume that a 200+ MPH bird wouldn't go through it easily. Materials act quite differently at ballistic speeds

N Number scam - action needed

While the FARs lay out the existence of reserved N numbers, and the fees associated, I find nowhere that requires the FAA to allow you to transfer a reservation from one party to another. So the FAA could internally just decide to stop accepting transfers and to require people to reserve numbers...

N Number scam - action needed

Reserved numbers expire every year and must be renewed for $10. So you have to spend the $6M every year. Only active registrations last 3 years. You're going to spend $6M+ per year running this buisness. There are 2,000 new planes a year, minus the ones that get de-registered (which are your...

N Number scam - action needed

FAR 47.15(4)(c): So yes, they get blocks, but they are limited in how many they can get, and they don't get to pick and choose the numbers they get. They will be random. The issue at discussion here is the ability to pick an unlimited number of specific numbers and hold them indefinitely.
