540 part manufacturers

I’m starting to procure parts for an IO-540 that I plan to put together (with help of course) in a year or two. Lots of Lycoming parts are on back order.

Can you mix and match parts from other manufacturers? Is there an advantage to having all genuine Lycoming parts vs a hodgepodge of Lycoming, Continental, and Superior parts?

You can mix and match - but I am careful about it. I always by Superior gasket kits becasue they are way les expensive than Lycoming (for instance). I wouldn't want a mix of cylinders however - I’d prefer them all Lycoming, or all Superior. Theoretically, as far as the FAA is concerned (for certified aircraft), PMA parts are interchangeable….
