Does AXIS support CANBus natively? As in CANBus pins in the connectors. If not then when upgrading a VFR G3X display to AXIS GDU will an external CANBus interface LRU be required? Such as the ubiquitous GAD 29 or more simply a GAD 13. So if we currently fly a VFR G3X and don't have an external IFR navigator or a GAD 29 LRU, will we need to add GAD 29 or GAD 13 to make an upgrade to a VFR AXIS GDU? In other words will all G3X to AXIS upgrades need to have an existing or added CANBus interface LRU?
CAN Bus is native in AXIS utilizing the same pin #s on the current G3X Touch connector pin assignments.

Could you please provide some reference. My GSU-25C is mounted on the back of my GDU470 on my RV-4.
I’m chasing an issue and am wondering if vibration is causing it.

My GSU25 is mounted to the back of my GDU460. I plan on doing the same after I swap the the GDU116. I've had zero issues so far and neither have any of my friends with RV-14's.
While its great that you haven’t had any problem with it, I’ve talked to too many Garmin tech’s that have torn their hair out over ADAHRS faults due to panel flexing to do that myself. The problem is that we cut these HUGE holes in the panels that were designed to add stiffness with a bunch of little 3-1/8” holes punched for steam gauges - many would be shocked at how much stiffness gets lost when we put an EFIS in the panel. The four screws at the corners do NOT re-stiffen many of the panels sufficiently.
I wish I'd have expanded on my previous post. I fully understand that vibration can and does occur on some planes. Everything you say Paul is correct. My panel was built by Aerotronics. Stein Air is the other big panel builder. As far as I know,, they both mount the GSU25 to the GDU. Not saying it is right, I'm just saying it is how I've seen it done. The manual reference is clear. I suspect if Aerotronics and Stein saw regular issues with this, they would change how they do it. I'm just an amateur I don't know what I'm talking about.

Not the thread for it, but there’s been plenty of people who have followed these directions and also torn their hair out with vibration issues only to have them solved by mounting on the back of the GDU…
I love my Garmin panel and almost everything about it. But there’s a continuing blind spot wrt their treatment of vibration mitigation and GSU mounting instructions.

how would they see it? They never fly the stuff they install. I suspect the issues pop up later and leave the owner to deal with it. they likely don't come back and blame them for the issue, so no feedback loop.
I suspect they would see it through support calls and/or feedback from their customers. I know if I ran into a problem with my GSU25 mounted to the back of the GDU, I'd let Josh at Stein know about it. I know they would appreciate that feedback.
I'm not familiar with the panel structure for other Van's models but the RV-14 is extremely rigid. That is one thing that I recall vividly after riveting it all together. The gazillion screws holding the panel to that structure doesn't hurt either. Maybe all Vans models are similar. I dunno. What I do know is I'm going to try to use the GSU25 mounting points that Garmin built into the GDU first as that is the most convenient. If that fails, I'll go to plan B.
Possible, but if my attitude display started doing weird things, I would likely be calling garmin to address it, not the guys that built my wiring harness. Clearly garmin has dealt with this many times and based upon that experience, recommends against it. You want to be taking guidance from those solving problems, not those installing them in cases where those are different folks.
I would do the same. But, since Stein bolts the GSU25 to the back of the GDU prior to shipping panels to their customers, I would also let them know. I suspect that feedback would be important to them.
I had direct experience with this issue and, in my case, it was resolved by fitting the newer -55 version of the GSU 25C. (CubCrafters aircraft, not RV.)
I'm in a similar situation... I'm guessing you are annoyed right now at the timing and just how prescient your prior comments were......Personally, I find Garmin's lack of transparency with posting roadmaps/timelines to be a major transgression with homebuilders. ....
Actually I'm more excited than annoyed. I'm looking forward to getting the new Axis system. I'd rather do this update now than after my airplane is flying. Waiting 3 1/2 YEARS for my engine is annoying. Well, that and having to make two final payments on my fuselage kit....
Both Stein (7 years ago) and my current panel builder (3 years ago) recommended mounting on the back of the displays. No added panel stiffeners. Zero issues so far.
I would put some of that blame on the reseller unless it was purchased from an individual.
It really depends on the panel and airplane model. Some of have stiffer and some don't. Garmin advises against mounting it somewhere that there is much vibration.
Way back in the day, I was told by someone at Garmin that the RV-12 and mounting it on the GDU was a nightmare and one of the major reasons they don’t recommend it and why the 12 has the AHRS mounted where it is.
I don’t care where people mount em. Try it and if it works, great! If you have issues, move it.
As I said before, works on some airframes and not on others. People are free to relive the past if they want to.
Wow. Amazing. Thanks Guys! I was within days, if not hours of ordering 2 10" G3X displays until I started following this thread. The new 11.6" ones look great and are within a few percent of the G3X price. Look to be very compatible with the other Garmin components.

I totally agree with the “wherever it works” sentiment. However….
The mounting guidance hasnt changed for the entire life of the GSU25. I’ve lost count of how many recalls, hardware revisions, service bulletins and airframe specific (RV12) deviations from guidance.
So I think Garmin could alleviate a lot of grief if they provided some clarity around the chasm between what operators, installers and avionics techs recommend and have proven works in various airframes and their install guidance.

Vibration issues aside, I hate having to pull a GDU that has the GSU 25 on the back. It's very un-maintenance friendly and adds a lot of extra work and monkey motion. Without it on the back the GDU can be removed in about 3 minutes for full access inside the panel. With the GSU 25 on the back you either have to disconnect it's connector and pitot static lines or try to remove the GSU at the same time as the GDU plugs and leave it dangling to wrestle around while you work. Neither of those options are optimum and can lead to unintended additional problems. Pitot static has to be retested too if the lines are removed.
While you're still building, drill the alternate location mounting holes for the GSU25 now just in case the GDU16 location doesn't work out. Remember to make the GSU wire harness a bit longer, especially if you mount it on the forward side of the sub panel. Same with pitot and static lines.

Almost 6 years of operation. Approximately 200 hours since completion, everything has operated flawlessly with zero issues. We removed the entire original wiring, and completely rewired the airplane. Panel is constructed of a single piece of .090 supported with angle just above the arch. Shelf is supported on the front side by small brackets tied to the upper gear towers. The structure created, was overbuilt on purpose. I am convinced you could lift my airplane with a crane and a hook attached to the panel arch.
Zero vibration issues with GSU25 mounted to GDU460. As I move forward, without a ruler to the back of the 460, it looks like the 116 should fit fine, with some hopefully easy wiring and connector changes and the orientation change of the GSU25.
Food for thought on GSU25 Vibration. This is the internet, your mileage will certainly vary. This is also experimental and so far the experiment has worked great.

I didn't. The avionics shop owner did it. I think he started out building airplanes at Beech and McDonnell. I learned a lot during the process.
