Seems that my 6 incher was the one that was always in my hand. I am a machinist, so I've got loads of them. You might consider a 3 piece set from one of the import suppliers. They are surprisingly accurate, and of good quality. If you are buying a machinist combo square,( with sliding head) I would invest in a 12 inch Starrett. The imports I have seen are far inferior.

A machinist square is probably what you want. This one is 4" by 2.5" and is great for most applications. Check the MSC sale fliers for deals on these. Get the imported ones.

I have three (my Dad was a machinist for 29 yrs), and as the guys above said, the more you have the better. The one I use the most is a little 4" one. Works for finding the center of angle and for truing up brackets and such.
