Default Fastest official RV-4 at Reno (non-rocket)

So, the best I could find is 2016 Matt Beaubien #81 "Low Motion" ran 230.239 in qualifying. That is the fastest official lap at Reno for an RV-4 that I could find.

Anyone know if there has been a faster official lap? Not a Rocket....just a regular RV-4.

I'm planning on racing next year hopefully. I need a target

Default Sorry.

No word on the records that have been set by 4's, but would like to know more about your set up. What you may have done to your cooling air flow, engine tweeking, and your prop "type, size, pitch" I think these things would be of interest to many of use with Rv's. Thanks if you can share. Yours, R.E.A. III # 80888

Nothing special yet. One P-mag on it. New prop being carved right now for turning it up to about 2900. Cooling drag will get sorted this winter, along with a few other aero clean-ups as well. Ernie Sutter #66 happens to be at my home field and one of his mechanics is going to help tweak on mine a bit...10:1, ram air, etc...

My fastest SARL race was in Galveston, TX last year at 182kts average with everything bone stock (O-360 fp, no P-mag). That's a completely different type of racing tho...cross country. Lots of -4's faster than mine there. I bought, not built. Only have had it 2 years. I'm just starting out, but am looking forward to getting it scooting along better.

Default Dave Anders..

I'm sure you know of Dave Anders , and his very fast, very good at everything RV-4. If you don't, just spend a couple hours searching the forum and reading up. I doubt there is a faster RV-4 on the planet, but I'm not sure if he ever raced it at Reno. He has shared many of his secrets through the years, and all the little details to shave drag inside and out...I believe he has been in the range of 260mph !

Yes, Dave is definitely the RV-4 guru. I've been reading a lot about his aero improvements, along with Bob Axsom's work.

What c.i. motor is Dave running? I know he was putting out 230+ hp.

Default Dave Anders at Reno

Dave was one of the early adopters of the QuestAir Venture for the Sportsman Class at Reno (later was the class "Air Boss" - but that is another story).

I believe his fastest lap (at the time - maybe 15 years ago) was 341 or 347 mph, can't remember exactly, but fast for the time!

If I recall correctly, Dave's plane one time was damaged due to aerodynamic flutter... of a wheel pant. You pays your money and you takes your chances...

Matt is running Nitrous and ADI. Since you want to know specifically RV-4, mine turned 227 on the lap right before my qualifying run in 2016. I think I ended up with an official speed of 224.

In 2017, we all qualified slower because the length of the track was calculated differently. My airplane is at 180hp with a fixed pitched prop.

If you show up without mods, you will be in a difficult situation for many reasons. Hence the reason I did not go back out to compete this year in the Sport class. That being said, PRS is a blast. Racing is a blast. Good luck to you.

The information that I post is just that; information and my own personal experiences. You need to weigh out the pros and cons and make up your own mind/decisions. The pictures posted may not show the final stage or configuration. Build at your own risk. Further more, these are my opinions and not those of Van's Aircraft.

I've talked to you a bit as well, Axel. I followed along with you in 2017. I've got both aero and engine mods in the works. Nothing real drastic as I still want to keep it flyable as a burger getter. I really just want to make the show in Reno at least once before it's gone (the rumor). I was curious of the Reno Medallion strictly because I've been a -4 nut since I was a kid growing up near Bakersfield with the Rockets...and we all know that an RV is never going to win Gold now. My main goal is to kick some tail down here in Texas in the RV Blue class of SARL. I've come in 2nd by 5-10mph several times....I hate that. Lol. I'm getting together the items needed for PRS next year. Hopefully it works out and I can make the trip.

Default Way faster

One word of warning in comparing speeds...
After spending the week working as crew chief for Grove aero, race 181...those published speeds are way off... RARA measures the course point to point with the pylons. (This year). They have, in the past, measured ?best flyable track ?.
The planes are actually traveling a much longer distance, but it?s still based on lap times.
So the reality is, everyone is going ALOT faster than what is shown in the results. That?s EVERYONE... I didn?t ask Matt what his TAS was actually showing, but I?m sure it?s much faster...(most people are too busy flying the plane and managing the engine to even bother looking at TAS&#128540.
Just a heads up...
