Mel has it right: far 1.1 is as clear as mud. (“A TSO is one way, but not the only way, to be approved”). Besides lighting, the faa has very publicly okayed adsb-out that is not TSO’d but with a manufacturer’s statement that it met the performance specs. And the faa is allowing non-TSO’d efis boxes on normally certified aircraft. etc. So if you are rolling your own lights and want to CYA you might write a note in your maintenance records that you compared your lights to those on a Cessna (for example), and yours were at least as bright or brighter, at all required angles, were the proper color, etc.
Gee I just wanted to know if they were going to be singing in my headset and screwing up my radios and I learned a lot more. Really just need a beacon for startup and taxi since the strobes are so bright. I’ll definitely put that statement in the logs about comparing them to a spam can light.
Just received and tested two MSTRB red LED strobes. No noise, incredibly Bright,
Incredibly light weight, synchronized and incredibly low price compared to a Aeroled or Whelen TSO beacon. They are cheaper and brighter than my Whelen quartz beacon.
Shout out to Moosepiliet for the inspiration.
