Go to this website. There is a N-number link.
http://www.faa.gov/licenses_certificates/aircraft_certification/aircraft_registry/
You can put in numbers you want and it will let you know if they are available. Once you find one you like, it will cost you $10 to reserve it.

Just read the FAA disclaimer on reservations. Follow up your internet order with a call. They sometimes ignore orders or do not list N numbers accurately (update) that are taken. You could get a surprise later when you try to apply with your reserved number, they might say, Oh we screwed up that number was taken. At some point you should get a letter, with the reservation N. George
