Where are the RV-12 Web sites

LettersFromFlyoverCountry

For all the kits that are being sold, I'm kind of surprised the RV-12 "community" hasn't taken root yet online. Are there any RV-12 Web sites (aka Checkoway types) worth checking out?

Given the beautiful job you did on your 7, I look forward to following your building process and seeing the end results. :)

Please send your RV-12 links to the webmaster at vans aircraft so he can post a link on the builders links section of the Vans site.

Jim Devlin - Wing Kit No. 84

Wing kit No. 84 safely received by (very expensive) airfreight in NE England. Unfortunately I am stuck at work in Azerbaijan and it will be late September before I get a chance to play with it.
No website as yet but will get around to it.
Anyone else got an engine??

my RV12 website

I was looking for a good name for my website and the first thought that came to mind was "rv12.com" but that didn't work out because some company in Oregon already registered it ;). So, I tried the following and it was not taken:

www.rv12info.com

I am including the typical photos and progress reports, but I am also trying to include some of the unique solutions to problems that I encounter. To that end, I have included a section for just the "tool widgets" that I have made.

I add something about once or twice a month.

I hope you enjoy looking at it.

Adding Wing Kit Completion Dates/build times

Added Tony (kit #10) and his construction home page (http://tonyearle.com) to the list.

Have been working on adding completion dates as they appear. If you are not on our very informal list (third entry in this thread) and would like to be, just post and I will try to enter it. Entry onto the factory's links list is up to you.

So far, based on a very limited sample, experienced builders take about 3 to 5weeks (about 130 hours?) and newbees take about 8 to 10 weeks (about 240 hours?) to complete the wing kit.

Build issues appear to center on using the correct rivets, drilling stainless steel, washers in the stall warning switch, which holes to dimple, and control surface bracket dimensions.

Interetingly to me is that the parts and their respective rivet holes are consistently reported to line up and fit together.

Updated 'the list' (third post on this string).

Ordered a set of Fuselage plans from Vans, $30 + shipping. Does not show how flaparons are mixed, but a very good read/study to go along with the photos.

A couple of Notes from reading the fuselage plans: 1) the fuselage receptacles for the wing's forward stub spar and rear spar have to be hand fitted to the wing parts. Thus the wing needs to be completed (or at least on hand) before the fuselage. 2) Also evidenced from the plans is that it was intended that the tail cone/eppanage be completed before the fuselage but Van's provides a work around for this.

Two possible errors are?:
Page 24-04 the order of steps 1 and 2 should be reversed.
Page 23-06 Step 5. I think the dimples should be flush OUTBOARD side not INBOARD side.

These are the only two that I have found, of course I could be totally wrong.

As always correction or additons are most welcome.

Regards, Dave

Nice list Dave.
Please add Wing Kit # 121 ordered at Oshkosh 7/29, recieved late September.
Slowly coming together in our cluttered basement in Huntsville, AL.
Anyone else in the area building a -12?

I didn't know you could order the plans separate from the kit. I would love to be able to read through them while I save my pennies and dimes!

Ordered wing #152 and fuse omn 15 Oct. Ordered emp kit on 31 Oct. cannot wait. This waiting is torchure. Busy preping workshop, making benched and bugging Rudi Greyling for bits of advice and tips.

I had vans fly out the wing and fuse plans to me so long so that I can feed my urge in the meanwhile.

Finding all the sites and blogs very informative. Thanks

Dave.... My fuselage is available for pick up in December. I am wondering if I should also order the empanage kit and build that first. What do you think.

Jeff

Dave & Reilly, I've added your information to 'the list.'

Jeff,

Keeping in mind that I have not yet started building - just reading the plans:

The intended build sequence appeared to be:

Tail Cone
Wings
Fuselage

But, 'in the beginning' the spin tests on the production prototype (red one) had not been completed, Van opted to ship wing and fuselage kits first. Now that the spin test are completed they are taking orders on tail kits (as of tomorrow).

That being said:

1)The Fuselage kit does require fitting to the Wings. So the wings should be done before the fuselage.

2) The Fuselage plans show the tail cone being attached to the main fuselage about 2/3 of the way into the Fuselage construction. But Van has provided a work around for this. Jim Cone (RV12 serial number 1) has reported that he will switch over to the tail cone when he comes to that part and after finishing the tail cone continue with the fuselage per the original build sequence. Either approach should be workable.

With all that being said. I think that it really boils down to kit availability, money, shop/storage space, and shipping/picking up ease.

Since you already have a shipping date for the fuselage, I don't see any reason to wait on working on it until you can get a tail kit. On the other hand, if you could get both at the same time, then starting the tail kit before the fuselage kit would be a reasonable way to go.

Hi Dave.... OK. I called Vans today about my picking up both the fuselage and tail kit at the same time. I looked at a RV-10 fuselage today being built in a Medford, OR hangar. Pretty cool. There a few pull rivets used to attach a composite roof to the fuselage and the fuselage is connected to a dolly so that the fuselage can be wheeled around the hangar.

Jeff

Today I ordered the emp/tail kit and wing kit. I was told I am #170. I haven't seen much info about shipping cost so I will put mine here. Wing kit to chicago was quoted at 350, both wing kit and emp $400 (delivered to my residence).

Originally I planned to order the emp. and fuse but decided that would take up too much room in the garage and make it difficult to build the wings. When the wings are complete I'll be able to bring them inside the house giving me plenty of room for the fuse assembly

John,

Thanks for the info.

Did you get any estimates on delivery dates? Do the wing and tail kit have about the same delivery delay or is the wait for one different from the other?

If the wait is the same so they could both be shipped together, is there any savings by shipping the two kits together?

Regards, Dave

Based on the lead times on the website (which I believe were updated today) I expect the kits to ship in 6 weeks. The girl on the phone was not sure when they would ship and said she would get back to me (website used to say 8 weeks for wing kit). It sounded like the tail kit could ship sooner.

Here is what I was quoted:
tail kit to nearest terminal: $175
wing kit to my home: $350
wing kit + tail kit to my home: $400

Dave,
Wing kit #113 arrived on 23 September, last rivet pulled 2 November. Fuselage ship date is 8 December. Just in time for my birthday on the 13th!

Updated the list and added some locations.
