Looking to camp in Michigan's UP with the RV-6

Peter.Fruehling

Well Known Member
Hey has anyone out there done any plane camping in the UP of Michigan? We're taking a week off in June to visit friends in Wisconsin, Indiana and Kentucky and would like to finish the trip with a few nights under the wing. I can't seem to find anything up there...

Let me know if you've had any experiences that were good or bad and where you had them.

THANKS! - Peter

camping in UP

Back in the late 70s, we flew our C172 into a grass strip north of Mackinac Island and camped at night and flew over to Mackinac during the day. Flightsoft still lists the grass strip as 45MI as private with the following info.

18-36 2150x80 turf
Manager: FISHING RESORT-NO PUBLIC SERVICES.
Phone: RWY 18/36 NOT PLOWED WINTERS - FOR COND IN SPRING - CALL 906-632-2067.
+60' TREES IN TRANSITION SURFACE EAST SIDE OF RWY.
PRIVATE ROAD AT NORTH END.
PERSONAL USE.

A google seach got the following hit.

FRANKLINS FISHING RESORT
BARBEAU, MI 49710-9413
906-632-2067

I have always wanted to go back, but have not so do not know if they allow flyin visitors any longer. Might be worth a phone call.

Many possibilities

Many of the airports in the UP let you camp at the airport. They are listed in the michigan airport guide. I will look at it when I get home and list some airports.
