O-360/IO-360 on RV-3 ??

RV-3 with 180 hp C/S prop

I have personally seen two RV-3's with 180hp and C/S props in my lifetime. One listed a top speed of 235mph on his prop card. With the new light weight props, starters, alts and cowlings-I wouldn't see why a IO-360 combo would weight any more than some of the IO-320's out there using the older starters and heavy alternators and cowlings. It's a shoe horn fit into the cowling but it has been done.

Has anyone any knowledge of a combo like this?

Allan Tolle out California way has a nice 3 with a carburated 0360 and cs prop. Install looked pretty straight forward, don't think its a 235mph airplane tho. If I were to go cs I'd do an 0360 next time around. BTW I raced against the original Harmon Rocket RV3, turtle deck, IO360 cs in the Copperstate 420 nm cross country race to Phoenix years ago and was a couple of miles an hour faster. We post race de-briefed each other and we both flew the same course and alts. Could have gone either way but it was not faster than my 3.

It is a Harmon Rocket. Now know as the Harmon Rocket I.

There were also some RV-3's with 180 engines. One of them that was at my home base was the FASTEST RV till Dave Ander's came alone in his RV-4 with IO-360 200 HP+ airplane.

RV-3 200HP

I have the salvage of N455DB, a Harmon Rocket I.
It is the red and white one on the RV-3.com "history" page.
Engine was a IO-360-A1A (angel valve) with 200 HP and a Hartzell constant speed prop.
I am expecting good short field performance. ;)
