Special Airspace Bulletin October 27, 2006

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Leading up to the election on November 7, presidential temporary flight restrictions (TFRs) are likely to change often. AOPA strongly urges all pilots to CHECK NOTAMS before every flight and to get updates from flight service during flight.

==> ATTENTION PILOTS <==

FAA TO ESTABLISH TFRs OVER SUGAR LAND ON MONDAY AOPA is sending this message to advise pilots in and near Sugar Land, Texas, a suburb southwest of Houston, that the FAA has issued a notam restricting flight in the area during President Bush's planned visit on Monday, October 30.

There will be two large 30-nautical-mile-radius TFRs. The first will be centered on the HUB VOR's 110-degree radial at 6.8 miles, extending up to Flight Level 180. It will be in effect twice on Monday, once from 3:50 p.m. local until 4:55 p.m. local, and again from 6 p.m. local until 7:05 p.m. local. Also, there will be a smaller 10-nm-radius GA no-fly zone in effect within the larger TFR during those timeframes. See AOPA Online for the full text of the notam along with a graphical depiction (
http://www.aopa.org/whatsnew/notams.html#6/4636 ).

The affected landing facilities are Ellington Field (EFD), La Porte Municipal (T41), Pearland Regional (LVJ), William P. Hobby (HOU), Bay Electric Supply Heliport (T95), Skyway Manor (T79), Wolfe Air Park (3T2), Alvin Airpark (6R5), Flyin' B (39R), Baytown (HPY), Houston-Southwest (AXH), R. W. J. Airpark (54T), Flyin Tiger (81D), George Bush Intercontinental/Houston (IAH), Scholes International at Galveston (GLS), Sugar Land Regional (SGR), Chambers County (T00), Bailes (7R9), and West Houston (IWS).

The second 30-nm-radius TFR will be centered on the HUB VOR's 259-degree radial at 20.0 miles, extending up to Flight Level 180.

It will be in effect from 4:20 p.m. local until 6:40 p.m. local on Monday. Also, there will be a smaller 10-nm-radius GA no-fly zone in effect within the larger TFR during that timeframe. See AOPA Online for the full text of the notam along with a graphical depiction (
http://www.aopa.org/whatsnew/notams.html#6/4636 ).

The affected landing facilities are Sugar Land Regional (SGR), Lane Airpark (T54), Westheimer Air Park (O07), Houston-Southwest (AXH), West Houston (IWS), Happy Landings (2H5), Flyin' B (39R), Ward Airpark (5T0), Skyway Manor (T79), Weiser Air Park (EYQ), Wolfe Air Park (3T2), William P. Hobby (HOU), Sack-O-Grande Acroport (9X9), Pearland Regional (LVJ), Alvin Airpark (6R5), New Gulf (T17), Flyin Tiger (81D), Dan Jones International (T51), Ellington Field (EFD), David Wayne Hooks Memorial (DWH), George Bush Intercontinental/Houston (IAH), Lackey Aviation (94R), Bay Electric Supply Heliport (T95), Bailes (7R9), and La Porte Municipal (T41).

Because TFR airspace frequently changes, AOPA strongly encourages pilots to obtain a briefing and CHECK NOTAMS before every flight.

TFR violators will be intercepted and forced to land.

Whew!

So there I was this afternoon, doing a little end-of-the-week-unwinding Acro just south of Houston's Class B, and I look down at the Garmin 396 and see these two TFR's covering the WHOLE frickin' area! "Hmmm...they weren't there when I checked the TFR's at lunchtime!" I thought....now what have I done! I RTB'ed, keeping an eye out for unwanted wingmen - the kind with sidewinders.....at least I heard other trafic - we might all be in the wrong, but at least there would be multiple targets!

Glad to see that they aren't in affect until Monday! Can I complain to XM about scaring me have to death? :rolleyes:

Hey Paul - the TFRs on the Garmin handhelds will appear in red if they are active, or yellow if they are scheduled for the future. Better check the color before you pop chaff... ;)

My understanding is that there is one guy deep in the basement of some FAA building somewhere who types these things into their system... maybe he was looking forward to a hot date tonight and input it wrong, you never know! :)

Don't they change from outlines to hashed when they are active?
