Best cure would be to stop accepting devices unsuited for the prevalent temperatures.

Inspected my 114 P mags today and found right mag temp dot black. Left mag temp dot white. Both mags have had 1 inch scat blast tubes since original installation 2 years ago. The temps dots on both have always been white until todays inspection. This would have occurred sometime over the last 25 hours. No gear bearing play.

I'm wondering if a internal problem could be the culprit? All engine indications and the pre take off mag check are normal.

Has anybody seen this on their installation? Has anybody talked to tech support about this issue?

I have a call into our friends at Hartzell but the p mag guy is gone for the day. I'll post what he tells me when we make contact.

- Talking with Hartzell I was told the 200 degree aspect is operational guidance, not a design limit.
- Here is my pMag temp strip at 700 hours. The temp strip shows the highest temp reached.

I gotta get the temp strips installed so I have better information. My main question is why after a couple of hot summers would I now have the over temp occur? Is it possible the mag has an internal malfunction causing the over temp since the other mag did not over temp according to the temp dot.

Can someone tell me a good source for this heat strip or similar brand.

Also how difficult is it to remove the strip and replace with a new one from time to time? Does the heat “weld” it to the mag base and make it a royal pain to remove?

Thanks.

I put in a call to Hartzell yesterday and did get a call back today.

The person that called me back seemed knowledgeable and was very helpful. He was the same person that does bench testing when you send your emag in for service.

He said most of the mags he gets for service have the temp dot turned black. He said he does not consider the 200 temp as a limit. I asked if an internal problem could cause the high temp. He said probably only if a bearing was going bad and you should see other indications when you do the mag check

He said a bench check of the mag is $250. In my case I have the latest software and hard ware so he did not encourage me to send the mag in even though I hit the 200 degree temp.

We talked about the temp strips that indicate a range of temps and he agreed that would be a better system than the 200 degree temp dot.

I have my mags off the engine. I have no bearing play. I have the removed the temp dot. Came right off no problem. I have the temp strips ordered and will apply them before reinstalling the mags.

For now I will just monitor the mag temp and continue on unless a problem develops.

The old dot comes right off. Clean the area with isopropyl and put your new stickers on.

Thank you!

The good news for me is the Thorp T18 has the open rear cowl cheeks on both sides. So some heat escapes after shut down unlike traditional cowling of RV’a and most any other GA aircraft. Plus both my sides of the cowl can be opened. But the wind can mess with them to be left open. Without tying them up.
