RV Operating Cost

My RV-6A has 500 hours on it in 4 years. Based on that, my cost in round numbers are:

1) Fuel 125 hr x 8 gal/hr x $3.25/gal = $3250 (80% Auto Fuel)
2) Insurance/yr = $1200
3) Hangar/yr = $1800
4) Engine reserve = 125 hr x $6.00/hr = $750
5) Oil (changes & comsumption) = $200
6) Maintainence = 125 hr x $8.00 = $1000
7) Charts, Satilite service & subscriptions etc. $1000

TOTAL $9200/yr (or about $73.50/hr)

(Note that this does not include any notes or interest etc.)

I think the biggest consideration in owning is the amount of flying time you actually log. TW has put a lot of the real costs involved and the hours he flies. His 70+ dollars per hour is a good reason for him to own.

Consider how many hours you will fly, your insurance, hangar, maintenance, fuel and oil costs and you should be able to come up with a reasonable cost per hour. Compare that to what it would cost to fly a decent high performance wet rental and carrying a renters insurance policy. You can also factor in pride of ownership and the convenience of having your own plane, but those are priceless.

Cheap days filled with flying is just around the corner, thats the story the wife gets anyway.
