I saw mentioned that the NGK BR8ES sparkplugs were available on Amazon at great prices so I ordered two 4 backs. The selling company was Buckeye tool supply via Amazon. The plugs arrived tossed loose in a plastic bag without any protection. Further examination showed they were screw tops not solids despite being marked as solids. A closer look shows they are more than likely counterfeit plugs made in China. You probably don’t want these in your aircraft.

Maybe it’s just time to going back to supporting reputable businesses and local mom and pop operations, and time to leave crappy parts in China and internet scammers with their bogus parts.

At least Amazon should take them back without question. You can even drop them off at a UPS Store and not even have them packaged up prior. Just give them the items and your return authorization number.

NGK plugs are dirt cheap at your local auto parts store and you know what you are getting.

Out of my local auto parts stores, oriley has been able to get the solid core BR8ES plugs. I keep a set on the shelf so I haven’t had to get them in a while but they had 4 in stock every time I checked. Additional here tomorrow noon.

Yep, I got a set of bad plugs from ACS. Replaced them with a set from Auto Zone and all is back to normal. 150 RPM low at static run and WOT. Mag check was less than 50RPM. Could not see any difference between the bad and good plugs. Boxes looked the same and plugs looked the same.

Looks like no one is immune to bogus parts.

I ordered my last batch from sixity auto parts, listed as a genuine NGK reseller. They arrived in NGK boxes and appear to perform.

Genuine car parts are actually kind of hard to find. Its a big problem with amazon and ebay. Be careful.
It isn't just car parts.

I ordered a pair of Pearl Izumi bicycling shoes on Amazon only to receive Pearl Lzumi shoes. It has taken me a few years to finally convince my wife to not purchase (very) expensive face lotions/creams/ointments on Amazon as no lotions, shampoos, conditioners, etc. have been genuine she purchased there.

If it's important........skip Amazon.

Fingers crossed. I just completed my C.I., and purchased plugs from ACS just "to be sure" that they were genuine--having been burned by a fake "VDO" oil pressure transducer from Amazon a couple of years ago.... I've purchased them from AutoZone in the past, which I see from post #4 above, is recognized by NGK. Post maintenance test flight in the next couple of days (hopefully).

What symptoms did your bad plugs exhibit, and under what conditions (my post maintenance ops checks were OK)?

Just lower RPM which caused caused lower climb and WOT performance. ... Mag checks were dead on but check your static RPM before your flight to see how it compares to your normal ones. Mine was 150 RPM lower than normal.

My faked plug failed in flight at very low hours in service.

jacoby lists a great video.

Worst bets: eBay, Amazon

Safe bets: Autozone, O'Reillys, Bumper to Bumper, Sixity Auto, Rock Auto

I just tested a batch of eight. Purchased from NAPA. Four in each box. They looked legit, but every one tested over 5K ohms. Well outside NGK spec. Returning them tomorrow and trying O'Reilly. Kinda aggravating. We only have the two and I've spent a lot at NAPA. I expect better. Oh well.
Fingers crossed
