Spinner Front Bulkhead Not Lining Up After CS Prop Rebuild

I ended up taking the S-603 up to my local machine shop and they will slot the bulkhead for me.

Spinner Front Bulkhead Not Lining Up After CS Prop Rebuild

S-603 bulkheads are predrilled for the dome mounting holes as well as the spinner holes. So it would require a new spinner, not a new bulkhead.

Spinner Front Bulkhead Not Lining Up After CS Prop Rebuild

The four holes that hold the spinner on don't have nut plates and I'm off about a half of inch. That's a great article but I don't have access to a milling machine and I'm not a machinist. EDIT: After re-reading, my response sounded a little abrupt. I appreciated the link and ended up using...

Spinner Front Bulkhead Not Lining Up After CS Prop Rebuild

At a 100 hrs my Hartzell CS prop had to go into the prop shop to be resealed due to slinging grease. Now the front spinner bulkhead screw holes don't line up. The prop shop said the front dome gets torqued on and never lands exactly on the same spot as before the disassembly. They say all...

Prop Sludge, High Oil Sample Numbers & Reusable Oil Filter

This morning I talked to Hartzel technical support. The said the grey clay in the prop hub was most likely from the grease settling out during its 2 year storage. I’m thinking the grey sludge in the crankshaft was a red herring. There was very little in the hollow crank on further inspection...

Prop Sludge, High Oil Sample Numbers & Reusable Oil Filter

I looked at my air filter today and the aft side may be letting some unfiltered air through....need to fix that.

Prop Sludge, High Oil Sample Numbers & Reusable Oil Filter

Thanks Brian, that's really interesting. I'm going to talk to Lycoming on Monday and will bring that up.

Prop Sludge, High Oil Sample Numbers & Reusable Oil Filter

I'm not sure I understand what we mean here? From the fuel pump into the crankcase?? How??

Prop Sludge, High Oil Sample Numbers & Reusable Oil Filter

Not enough gray stuff left for analysis I'm afraid. My main concern is, the prop shop said the grease slinging was due to the grey stuff. I can't be getting a prop reseal every 100 hrs! I'm not 100% bought into the theory about the grey stuff causing the grease slinging.. The grease was...

Prop Sludge, High Oil Sample Numbers & Reusable Oil Filter

I'm not operating in dusty condition but I have flown through a lot of smoke from wild fires. I just cleaned the intake filter but how it fits is definitely something I'll check out further.

I just completed a compression test and borescoped the cylinders...all looked good.

Prop Sludge, High Oil Sample Numbers & Reusable Oil Filter

The Phillips XC 15W50 with Camguard went in at 50hrs. The engine appeared to be fully broken in at that time but maybe not. I attached the Blackstone report, which contains the first sample at the end of the mineral oil break-in and then the current sample with the higher numbers. Back in the...

Prop Sludge, High Oil Sample Numbers & Reusable Oil Filter

Yesterday I picked up my resealed Hartzell constant speed prop from the prop shop. 100 hours from new and it had to be resealed due to slinging grease. When I removed the prop it was shocking to see the grey greasy oil in the prop hub and crank. The prop shop said the hub was packed with a...

    Hartzell CS prop Leak Help

Just for the record. I picked up my prop from the prop shop yesterday. The problem was, there was grey clay like substance packed into the prop. Apparently this caused the leak. I thought the oil coming out of the prop and crank when I removed the prop looked awful. I'm going to have to...

    Why do we preheat?

I agree with you...where's the evidence. Here's an antidote: Back in the 1980's I was running Aeroshell 15W50 in a O-470. For reasons that seemed sane at the time, I parked my C-180 on the ice next to the shore of a lake for the night. When I was preflighting the aircraft the next morning...

    Hartzell CS prop Leak Help

Update: I finally got some good weather and flew for 2.5hrs. Slinging grease worse than ever. Removed the prop and it’s currently at the prop shop having new seals installed. Let this be a warning, don’t let the prop set uninstalled for two years… the seals can take a set.

    Remote Leno Jacks

    Yup, I corrected the link.

    Remote Leno Jacks

Others will advise on the wiring. I'm here to say ditch the standard jacks and just have a LEMO to standard adapter like this on hand. I haven't missed the standard jack and whenever someone wants to use a non LEMO headset, I hand them the adapter. EDIT: Corrected link
