I won big today at a raffle and left work today with a wifi-only 16GB iPad. I've got a Garmin 396 and GNS 430 already, but something like Foreflight seems like it could be a great add. I've starting looking in to what accessories I'd need to make it work (my free prize is going to be expensive!)...

Does anyone have advice on a good nav app and how to best get GPS in? I don't think I'm ready to spend a few hundred bucks on ADS-B in yet...

Thanks,

Foreflight and a Stratus 2 will give you GPS, Weather, Traffic, synthetic vision, and a really cool (free) artificial horizon app.

Ifly is a great program. Yearly cost is quite reasonable. Works great on the internal GPS on android. IPad needs an external GPS I think?
For your GPS receiver you should look at DUAL.

If you like Do-It-Yourself projects, you can build a dual band ADS-B receiver with WAAS GPS for about $160 that will talk WiFi to an Ipad running either WingX or Foreflight (and others, I believe).

I built one and it seems to work well, and just 3D printed a case for it yesterday.

For an external gps the bad elf pro is a fantastic unit. I love mine.

Just bought all the parts for this - the winters can have a lot of 'no fly days' here, so now I have a project. Thanks for the info :)
