I've looked at a bunch of posts, and I couldn't find anyone else who did what I am thinking of (uh-oh) so here goes..

I have a high finished ceiling in my garage. I'm thinking of winching my wings up there somehow for storage while I build the fuselage. I think they would fit best with the leading edges down. I could use strips of carpet or nylon strapping to connnect the wings to some sort of winch device. I'm having trouble with the winch part.

I found a "Racor Bike Lift" http://www.racorinc.com/products.fx?id=104 that might work but it is rated for only 50# (I think each wing is about 60). I might be able to use 2. I would certainly not trust its locking device and would augment it somehow.

Has anyone else done something similar? I've seen wings lifted up and stored flat above or below joist, or lifted up and hung from walls, but I've not seen any hung from the ceiling.

I did exactly what you are talking about. It was many years ago, but I used a rope on each end of each wing, and heaved them up flat against the ceiling. It is a little scary, but not a big deal. I didn't use pulleys or anything, just several friends. Some lifted on the wings, one pulled the rope, which went up in the attic and looped over a rafter, and came back down through the sheet rock. I don't recall any more details, and don't have a picture.

slings work well

We moved a pair of wings from Tennessee to Tucson. After enclosed a car trailer, we used slings that had thick foam so the sling strap did not dig into the wing to suspend the wings from the rails on the trailer.

I see no reason you couldn't raise the sling(s) to the ceiling in your shop. Look at the third picture on this web page.
