I am in the very slow process in building a HR2. It is suggested to use a IO540C4B5 narrow deck. Can a wide deck be used? Is the narrow deck advised because of a weight issue? Any and all info is appreciated. Thanks

Narrow Deck vs. Wide Decks

Any engines built after 1976 timeframe are going to be wide deck. Any weight differences between the two are negligible, and you should be able to use either. Our race pilots have swapped between narrow deck and wide deck, and now back to narrow deck. The baffling is different, but it shouldn't create a problem for you if your not removing one type and replacing it with another.

Stronger cases?

Many years I talked to a well known engine builder about the difference. He said that the narrow deck cases were built stronger. Narrow decks cases have more internal structure that make them more suitable for high performance upgrades.
