I have secured a used O-360 with 0 smoh for use on my RV7.

This engine previously had the Airflow Performance FI on it and the prior owner took it off to use it on his new engine. That means I have to source a carb.

Question for the carb experts out there.

Which carb is the best for the bone stock O-360 to prevent the lean climbout issue?

MA4-5 10-3878 or MA4-5 10-4164-1 or ????

What is the best way to find a good carb? Buy a reman? Who has the best price? I do not have a core:(

Thanks,

Carb

Brian,
I'm not an expert, but I have drilled my carb on my 0-360 to make it richer.
The 10-4164 is what Vans is shipping on their new 0-360.
If there is a richer one, I'm not aware of it.
Odds are, you will be drilling the main jet anyway to get the fuel flow correct.
Your cowl cooling and your choice of props will determine how much drilling to do.
As for where to get a carb? We purchased a carb from a guy that upgraded to Fuel injection.......so that would be a good place to start looking.
The core value is only about 500.00 so that gives you a bases to shop from.
We actually got a NEW carb for 500 because the seller was a nice guy and offered it to RV guys instead of selling as a core.
So good luck shopping.

Can a MA4-5 #10-5193 work on an O-360?

What would be the difference in this and a 10-3878 or 10-4164-1?

quality aircraft

I just got mine from David at Quality Aircraft 877-833-6948, $1,550. Lot of money for such a simple yet vital part.

MA4-5-10-4164-1

When I ordered my TMX-O360, I was strongly advised to get the MA4-5 10-4164-1 carb. This is richer than the stock carb that Mattituck supplies.

The advise came from my brother who has over 800 hrs on his RV-7A with an O360. He switched from the leaner carb to this one.

Maybe he'll add some detail if he reads this thread when he gets back from OSH.

It is my understanding that all it takes to make a 10-3878 a 10-4164-1 is a drill bit and bore out the main jet. Just what I have seen here so I may be incorrect.

My parts manual shows three carbs for the O-360, not including the side draft carb:.

10-3878 ... A1A, A1AD, A1D, A1Ld, A2A, A2F, A3A, A3AD, A4A, A4M, A5AD

10-4164-1.... A1A, A1D, A2A, A2D, A2F, A3A, A4A

10-5034 ...A1F6, A1F6D, A2F
