Someone in the industry surely knows what is behind the floating anchor nut situation. Van's doesn't list them, Wicks catalog says they are $0.68 but they are really $1.37 the last time I looked. Similar situation at ACS but I got a better price from Aircraft Spruce so ordered them. However, they are on back order and are not expected in until April 9, 2008. What's the explanation?

I doubt that is the reason

Boeing,McDonnell, Douglas, North American, Rockwell probably doesn't use a lot of 8-32 platenuts on their latest airplane but it's possible. The industry has srunk to a very small part of its former self and there may not be sufficient demand for aircraft quality hardware producers to stay in the business. Whatever the cause something has dramatically changed and someone in the parts engineering world knows what it is.

I will check stock in the morning.

The bigger manufactureres and the war have affected the availability of items in this category for about the last 2 years.
Most of the raw materials have gone up in price, which increases finished goods prices.
There are only a very few big players in the manufacture of these and the Mini pattern nuts, which are closely related.
I think they saw an opportunity, and we are all paying more to fulfill their dreams.

We should have them,

And yes our cost for new ones has almost quadrupled in the last 18 months.

Source for 8-32 floating anchor nuts

I,too, had trouble finding them. I tired Genuine Aircraft Hardware, but was told they would not have any until March. I ended up buying some from East Coast Aviation Supplies, Inc. (www.ecasinc.com). I don't have the invoice in front of me, but recall the price was about $0.85 each for my order of 30 pieces.

Good luck,

Check automotive racing specialty shops. I believe I got some from Pegasus once, reasonably priced, and they had the reduced head sheer rivets too!

I just checked their website, says in-stock and VERY reasaonably priced.....

A few years ago I was visiting a builder. It turned out he had bought a ton of floating anchor nuts -- I think from Boeing -- and told me to take as many as I wanted. I think I took about half a sack of them. I don't think I've ever used a one on the project.
