Positioning the harnesses according to the narrow red bands is a great idea except when those bands are mounted so loosely that they just slide down the harness Can someone give me the measurement from the back of the D-shell to where the red band should be?

Approximately 23" and 62"

The bands are located approximately 23" and 62" from the end of the connector. That should get you in the ballpark. I had the same problem as you in that my red bands moved as well. I used a sharpie and painted marks on the wires.
