I found just a little heat from a hot air gun and it come right off. Don't get too hot or you leave glue residue. If so, some Lacquer Thinner takes that off.

This! A small amount of heat takes care of most of the effort, and what's left can be easily dealt with with lacquer thinner/acetone/etc.
If you *haven't* put the UHMW tape on yet, though, maybe consider some of the 3M Paint Protection Film instead. It stays clear and (in my experience) is easier to remove without separating the film from the adhesive. Flyboy Accessories has it in just the right lengths and they are a VAF supporter as well.
