This Saturday we chalked up another great gathering of RVs for our 21st Annual Twin Cities RV Fly-in and Picnic. There is a lot of history to this event and its hard to believe so many of us have literally "grown up" (and maybe grown old!) with this gathering. The venue has always been the Sky Harbor Airpark, near Webster, MN (about 25 miles south of Minneapolis/St. Paul). Originally it was hosted by Jerry and Judy VanGrunsven at their home on the SE corner of the field. A couple years later we moved to Hank and Janice Geissler's (RV-4) further down the strip to the west. Last year we moved next door to Roy and Kim Fuhrmann's home.

The airpark is about as idyllic as you can imagine (especially on a clear and cool September afternoon). The grass strip is about 3000 feet long, very wide, with just a few lumps and bumps. Over the years we have truly been blessed with generally great weather. A couple times we had some windy days to make those landings a little challenging (yesterday it was a little gusty but at least down the runway). We have never been rained out although our attendance was down 4 days after 9/11 when flying was still forbidden (but we still had about 60 folks who drove in).

This year we were competing with our good buddy Larry Vetterman's fly-in out in South Dakota (wish I could have been in both places on the same day). But we still had 21 airplanes fly in and just over 130 people enjoyed picnic. The food commander has always been retired DAL captain Larry Winn (RV-4) with assistance from Iowan Don Flanders. This has always been a neighborhood event and a good portion of the airpark residents help out with mowing, moving airplanes, dragging tables and chairs and making things work. We truly want to thank our hosts Roy and Kim Fuhrmann, the Geisslers and all the local friends and neighbors that make this our "big" event of the year!!
