Looking for a good airport to camp at prior to making a morning Oshkosh arrival.

Place to pitch tent
Walking distance to town for food, etc
Decent fuel price
Clear sky with no wind or rain, not too hot, not too cold.:D

Jeff, Which night & how close to OSH. I am 100 miles ssw and you won,t need to pitch your tent. I drive up on Sun. night, but will be around on Sat. night. Ron

There is a little airport called Galt (10C) about 100 miles south of KOSH. The airport is apparently in foreclosure, but I do believe you can camp there. It has been 20 years since I was there, and it sounds like they have made many improvements, although maybe not the wisest investments.

Website and news story links below.

There is a sentence on the Galt web page that says "or reserve the campground for the whole weekend....it's up to you. You can even taxi your airplane to the campground for the full "grass roots" experience."

BTW, I'm sort of planning the doing the same thing as you, but camping in my brother's back yard about 15 minutes from KBUU. I should probably let him know.

fond du lac {kfld } might be a choice for you. just south of osh. lots of activity there. :)

near... hey it's an RV... what the heck is 'near'...

We have done overnights at Yankton SD which is in the far Southeast corner of the state and leaves an easy flight into Oshkosh... Carlson aviation was great with discounted fuel, free food, a couple of courtesy cars, and easy camping right by your plane close to a great FBO. Carlson did not get their lease renewed and the City took over operations and this will be the first Oshkosh for them so I don't know what they will do as hosts but it is a good stop point. This year we are going to stop a few miles Northwest at Mitchell, SD to run the AirVenture Race that takes you right to the show with a bit more fun ;)

Wautoma Y50

There is a very nice little town and airport about 30 miles west of Oshkosh called Wautoma, airport identifier is Y50. Camping is available on the field and many folks camp there the whole week and fly back and forth to KOSH. The local EAA chapter has burgers and brats cooking at their hangar every night during Airventure week. The new FBO building has showers available for those camping, too.

The past 5 years, I have stayed at Wautoma (in a hotel) and either driven (rental car) or flown my plane into KOSH every day. This year, having just bought a new plane and being thoroughly broke, am going to try camping on the field at Airventure to save money.

Wautoma is a perfect staging point for Airventure.

Thanks for the great offer Ron, it would most likely be Friday night. I'm gonna weigh out all our optoins but may take you up on it.

Read the story about Galt (10C). Wow what a neat airport, I really hope they can work things out. Could work.

Fond Du Lac could work.

Ya Stephen you're right about 'near' in a RV. I'm thinking within an hour or so of Osh.

I'll look into Y50 Neil, sounds about perfect.

I thought I saw a post about Portage (C47) also, but couldn't find it.
