What did you do w/your RV this weekend? (5/18-19/2024)
Basic Ignition Stress Test
On the runup pad, the usual 40 drop was more like 100 on one of them. Not rough, not ugly, just excessive. No problem, only going up to screw around anyway, so let's test.
Set up 65% cruise, lean just short of rough. Turn on EFIS logging. Run on one ignition for a bit, then both for a moment, then the other ignition, the one with the abnormal drop. Catch a few barrel rolls, then back to base.
At home, download the memory stick, find the flight segment, dump the single ignition EGTs into Excel and plot them. Look at #4 when running on the top plugs, right side of the plot.

Preventing a canopy crack in a RV-8
Well I jumped into the deep end and split the canopy. Based on what I observed, I’m glad I did it.
1- There was a lot of tension in this area. The cut relieved that force on the forward half and cowl was almost “floppy” and very easily clecoed in place.
2- The aft section was much easier to pull in place to the frame.
3- The rear will need a thin spacer to make it even with the front since I cut it at the joint.
4- The weld joint had a weld bump that needed filing down.
5- Due to the curve, some extra sanding with a belt sander to make the cut even resulting in a 1/4” gap. This will be sealed with proseal under a fiberglass targa strip finished at same time as the windscreen.

Working over the weekend on extra paper routes for the F/S/C, so no RV this time around (yuck). WX is beautiful here in N.TX. Hope the flying weather is also nice where you are this weekend, and looking forward to reading some of them things people did this weekend. v/r,dr

It may be perception but it seems like a lot of 8’s with canopy cracks get them in the proximity of the canopy brace that bridges the 2 sides. I remember Mr Horton‘s explanation of the increasing force as the canopy narrows. i may be overthinking this but if I go ahead and cut the canopy and...
