Recently, I was made aware of the fact that the FAA database with a pilot's name and address is public information. I suppose I always knew this but just didn't think about it much....until a friend Googled my name and noticed this SCAM piece of "news" that includes my name and address. http://www.primarypost.com/pilots/A2534601/Arlen-Ray-Stauffer

The FAA allows you to change the "Releaseability Status" of your address: see http://www.faa.gov/licenses_certificates/airmen_certification/change_releasability/

Less than one day after I emailed them (email to [email protected] with your request), I received this:

I input a code into your airman record that indicates you don?t want to
have your address made available to the general public.

Your address will be removed from the Active Airmen Database. The website
is updated each federal work day at midnight and the downloadable file is
updated monthly.

The Aviation Investment and Reform Act for the 21st Century, in addition to
other statutory requirements, require us to make airmen CERTIFICATE
information available to the public.

For those of you who are concerned about another place out there on the Internet that has your information that can be downloaded by anyone, you may want to consider taking advantage of this opt-out opportunity.

Awesome. Judging by the number of Sporty's catalogs and flight school ads I get, this should save a couple of trees a year. Now I'll just have to start tracking down the folks who already have my address and get out of their databases...

There is an iPhone App called PaperKarma that will help stop the catalogs that you get in the mail. (looks like Google Play also)
