Previously my pre-flight didn't include tugging on the exhaust pipes. A number of months ago someone posted that they felt a loose pipe during pre-flight and found a broken support bracket. Since then I have given a tug on the pipes to check for tightness.
Today I did that, and found that the left exhaust had play. I pulled the cowl and found that the support tube at the crankcase had broken.
If I had not run across the post suggesting pulling on the exhaust, I might not have found the problem until the next oil change, or until I lost a pipe in flight. Note that the last oil change was less than 5 hours ago and I checked everything, and all was OK.
Thanks again, VAF!!
