Does anyone know where to buy sealed wheel bearings for a tailwheel? I have an "Aviation Products" full-swivel tail wheel on my RV-4 (I believe they're no longer in business?), and need to replace the wheel bearings. The wheel assembly is an R&K 6x225...standard 6" wheel (2.25" wide), riding on a 5/8" diameter spindle (single yoke thing). Van's does not have the right size (I need bearings with an outside dia. of 1 3/8", and inside diameter of 5/8"). Here's a shot of what the silly thing looks like... THANKS!

Aircraft Spruce

I just went through this. I can verify the measurments of 1 3/8 OD 5/8 ID shoulder bearing as I just recieved a set from AS. P/N 06-00060. The price is right too. $2.45 ea.

More on tailwheel bearings

So as most have found the Van's bearings get no grease from the zirt and they are not the best. I went to my local bearing store and bought 2 sealed bearings. Part# 32262-88 and I also need 2 bushings part# EP060808. .377 X .503 X 1/2" The guys at the bearing store said anyone in that bearing biz could use these numbers to pull the needed parts.

With that type of set up you need to be careful to not overtighten your axle nut and squish the bearings!

Spacers

Vince should sell a set of spacers for these 5/8" bore bearings.
But if he doesn't or won't, it's a great solution:

The spacers can be machined to exactly constrain the bearings,
and then the axle bolt can be torqued down tight. This guarantees
the strongest tailwheel assembly and the best bearing preload,
plus it takes the guesswork out of putting the thing together.

The setup on my 8" tailwheel is like this, and it is super.

I have a whole bin of spacers for those bearings. They aren't long enough to touch each other inside the tailwheel when installed and should have an easy to make shim installed. Call me if you need a pair. $10/pair.
