This may be a really dumb question - if so please be sparing with the humiliating comments.

The serial ports on the Dynon trail on about 6 feet of wire and look (to me anyway) untidy and unsightly. When not in use you are supposed to tuck them away somewhere.

Is it possible to shorten the wires, directly substitute USB ports for the serial ones, and mount them on the panel for easy access using a laptop and USB cable?

Ideas?

Thanks

Chris

Serial to USB

Have you though of purchasing a third party rs-232 to USB device like a Keyspan? Their small enough to put behind the dash and your laptop would just see them as a serial port.

The D180 comes with a USB-serial converter.

If you want, you can permanently install this in the plane and put the plug on the dash somewhere.

Shortening the wires is fine. You can't just re-terminate them in a USB plug though- USB and serial are totally different and require an chip to convert from one to the other.
