Just had the opportunity to fly a fellow VAFer's RV-7 from it's summer home in Steamboat Springs, CO to it's winter home in Sebastian, FL. Thought I'd provide a few numbers:

RV-7, IO-360, constant speed prop
Total straight-line distance = 1,763 miles (we actually flew a good bit more than that going around mountains and weather, including a 30 min backtrack for low clouds)
Total flying time = 11.45 hours
Fuel consumed = 123 gal (ROP leaning only - somebody else's airplane. I probably could have cut another 2 gph off that by aggresive leaning)
Avg speed = 153.9 mph
MPG = 14.33

That's pretty effecient. No way you could make that trip in most cars only burning 123 gal of gas. (and it would take you a lot more than 11 hours;))
