I need to sandwich a fiberglass part between two aluminum sheets. I also would like to buck the rivets verses using blind rivets.

Do I need to use soft rivets or are the typical hard rivets we use OK?

Sandwich

Lots of variables, but it can be done. If the fiberglass is strong and or flexible it will likely tolerate being riveted in a 2 sheet sandwich without fracturing around the rivets although it may show up as the years go by. -3 dia rivets are better here than -4, also better to drive the rivets a little less than more which will lessen the clamping forces. In non-structural applications I like to use the soft rivets (no dimple & no letter after AN426 or 470). As an example I riveted my airscoops in the side skins with AN426-4-4 soft rivets with small .020 alum backing plates for each rivet.
