Just wondering what does SkyView SV-GPS-250 GPS Receiver and Antenna give you if you are not planning to buy the 500$ nav skyview software?

Is the NAV software necessary? Is there any utility of the GPS reciever (besides a feed to the transponder for ADS-B)?

SkyView can't show terrain or Synthetic Vision without a GPS position, nor winds or the flight path vector. While you can hook up any GPS position source to provide this, the SV-GPS-250 is a true 5Hz GPS that provides smooth and fast updates. It is also backed up by the SkyView battery. External GPS units are almost exclusively 1Hz on their output, even if they are internally 5Hz (Like a Garmin 430W).
