I am currently looking at retrofitting a Dynon Skyview to my RV-7. Can the rpm signal for the original vans instrument be used (I would like to keep the vans gauges as backup) or is it better to pull the signal from the magnetos?
 
If you have the Van's RPM transducer that goes in the vacuum pump location, that will work fine for SkyView, or you can just use the mags and save some weight and wiring.

However, you can't connect to SkyView and the Van's gauge at the same time. A failure in one can affect the signal on the wire, meaning you have less reliability than just a single gauge, not more. If you want both, you need to hook us to the mags.
