I have Skybolt fasteners on my upper and lower cowlings--love 'em! There's just one really annoying problem: the snap rings on the back of the screws keep falling off in flight and get lost. I've already lost 9 of them. It's not that big of a deal, since the Skybolts are secure when the cowlings are on. But when you remove a cowling, the offending Skybolt (without a snap ring to hold it in place) falls on the floor and rolls away.

Is anybody else having this problem? What's the solution, other than buying a bag full of spare snap rings from Skybolt?

Cowl Thickness

The snap rings should not be falling off. I suspect that your cowl may be too thick and when you install the ring it is not snapping in below the edge of the stud all the way around. Take a look and see if that is an issue.

Exactly what Don Said . . .

You may have to order new collars that are deeper - I had to do this with 4 Skybolt fasteners I installed. They should not be falling off . . .
