Thank you to a fellow forum member who suggested using silicone around the FAB mount to carb drain was not good practice. I thought it was o k in this instance because if a chunk did get loose it would most likely get sucked in and spit back out. Is there a better solution to seal around the carb drain? Should I remove the silicone?

Quite a few years ago there was a partial power loss on an RV-8 because of ingestion of RTV into the carb.
I strongly recommend you remove it.
As for what to use... I think the construction manual recommends tank sealant?
Also, the goal is to just stop air leakage. I usually just put a small bead around the perimeter on the top... just enough to seal the gap. If you need to remove teh plate later during maint., no sense in having to remove a huge amount of sealant, and it is much less likely to get sucked through the engine if it does come loose for some reason.
