This question will reveal my ignorance when it comes to shielded cables. :)

I want to have a disconnect point at the wing root for my strobe cable. It has three wires plus a shield wire. So do I need a 4 possition connector and connect the shield wire?

On a related note, when dealing with cables that do no have a seperate shield wire like the stobe cable does, how do you connect the shield at a disconnect point?

Yes to the first question.
Use four pin Molex connector.
Use a connector that has enough connections for the wire cable plus one for the shield. On coaxial cables use BNC in the aircraft. Use a male on each end and use a joiner or use a female and male to join the cables together. Males are easier to find than the females thus the joiner that will take a male in each end.
