I've been updating my Dynon HDX with the paid charts, Airports, Approaches, Sectionals, etc. for a few years. Suddenly now, as my USB sticks update, I'm getting multiple error messages. The sticks still have plenty of empty space and have been used successfully for Dynon charts for a few years. Error messages appearing with both stick F: and stick M: as the update is attempted. The software eventually completes, and the green status bubbles turn green, but who knows if the data is really good?

ERROR MSG 1:
There was a problem installing C:\XX-edited-privacy-XXXXXXXXXX\AppData\Roaming\Seattle Avionics\DataManager\ScannedCharts\US\LO\Texas.LO.MBTiles.sqlite to the data card or memory stick on M:

ERROR MSG 2:
Error installing Dynon SkyView US IFR Low Altitude charts (Wyoming) to F:: KeyFile missing.

Anyone else having problems with Dynon charts or Seattle ChartData on this cycle?

Hi Carl
I've also had HDX1100 (dual) and Seattle Avionics for several years, just used ChartData Mgr to check & update a USB drive with Airport Diagrams, Approach Plates, Sectionals (10 areas), etc ... all green balls.

Hold the phone!
Out of curiousity, I checked the \AppData\Roaming\Seattle Avionics "status" file (AutoUpdate.txt) on the hard drive (C:) and see lots of similar msgs (WARNINGs)
e.g., "GetScannedExpDates KeyFile does not exist:"
Since the App update returned green balls, perhaps it's normal for DataManager to return such info as it goes thru an update ?
Reckon somebody needs to contact Seattle Avionics and get the lowdown on these msgs.

It seems that I have always battled the Seattle Avionics app. It usually takes me twice to fully ensure an update.

But recently I couldn't update anything. So out of curiosity I bought a new memory stick and all is well. Don't know why.

I often watch the Activity Report window on ChartData and I’ve never seen these error messages before. And there are dozens of error messages appearing today as hundreds of files get updated. Earlier today I left a voicemail to Seattle Avionics support, so far no response. Since it’s reporting missing files I would be surprised if swapping in a new stick, or reformatting and reloading these sticks would solve the problem. I haven’t gotten to the airplane to try the new files, but then again, I’m concerned that I could corrupt something in the plane. Since the Dynon is VFR only I’m not real concerned about having one device of many devices having out-dated charts….

Thoughts?

After a few start-up challenges years ago, learning the systems, my Seattle Avionics ChartData updates for Dynon HDX have been reliable and simple until today.

While we are talking about it....... Are these updates ridiculously slow? It may be my old laptop but it takes well over an hour every month for a single USB...

Every 3rd or 4th update something doesn't update, usually the approach charts but sometimes error messages. I just reformat and start again. They do take a very long time to update especially if you're updating 15 states or so. I tend to start the update and find something else to do for an hour, it's to aggravating to watch it update at a snails pace.

Well that (reformatting) solved it for me when I started having errors at one point updating my Seattle Avionics USB for AFS. If you do that make sure you back up any other necessary files - in the case of AFS the HRTERRAIN folder also lives on the stick and isn't part of the Seattle Avionics deal.

Reply from Seattle Avionics:

Dear Carl,
Thanks for reaching out to us!
There appears to be an issue with the USB drive, so I would suggest formatting it and preparing it for use in the Data Manager.
Connect the drive and in the Data Manager, click on "Prepare USB flash drive". Select format USB and click OK. After the drive has been formatted, repeat the same step but check the Prepare USB drive and click OK.
After this, the drive should be ready for use. Select the data you wish to download and click on "Update now".
It should help, but please let me know how it goes!

Kind regards,

I'll try their advice and post the results...
and also try with 2 brand-new sticks and see if the error messages persist...
it doesn't make sense to me that sticks that worked fine for a few years are suddenly failing, particularly with plenty of empty space, and getting those two error messages about missing files?

Yeah, that's their standard answer. I have, however, had SA booger up more than one USB stick to the point of it being unrecoverable *at all*. Can't reformat, either with SA or Windows, and it's basically locked forever.

SA's DM is a HORRIBLE program. In so many ways.

The same, but different. Garmin Database Manager worked great for me for years, until it didn’t. Numerous reinstalls, .dll file updates and additions. Been using the same datacards for ever.
On a whim, formatted SD cards and all is well again. Who knows!!

Well, i just set up two brand new 32Gb sticks, formatted them using the tools in Seattle Avionics ChartData and then prepared them for Dynon Skyview. Then I loaded all the charts without error messages.

I did keep and copy existing .gpx files, a WAYPOINTS.csv file, and the current .duc file into the new chips.

I guess cleaning the sticks occasionally fixes the errors.

I'm not defending SA here - but USB stick do just occasionally die. It's not certain that SA had anything to do with it. They don't last forever.

No, but it's mighty convenient that the ONLY ones that fail on me are the ones that DataManager is writing to.

That would be fine, except whatever it does to them, they *can't be formatted* ever again, not with any method or tool that I've found. They're useless, trash, after whatever happens happens.

Being able to reformat a stick and use it would be an *improvement* for SA.

Inconvenient, sure - but also understandable - DataManager writes SO MUCH data to a disk (way more than is needed), it's no wonder they overheat and die - resulting in a disk that won't respond to anything after that.

I've had really good luck with SanDisk 3.0 32GB in the full size, they seem to take the heat better and have a lower failure rate.

That's what I use. Doesn't seem to make a difference. I just now consider USB sticks for SA data as expendables that will last a year or so then need replacing.

I have experienced some failures of SanDisk thumb drives (read/write & slow & capacity - not necessarily with SA) that were fixed by using software on Western Digital site (owns SanDisk).

"Free Third-Party Windows Software to Format Memory Cards & USB Drive as FAT32"

Google it & evaluate for yourself....

Just another data point. I've used the same 2 short (small) ScanDisk 3.0 32GB USB's for the past 6+ years. Yes I've had to reformat but they have never not worked.
