While perusing the Aircraft Spruce catalog I noticed that they have SS exhaust studs with pre-drilled safety wire holes. Does anybody here safety wire their studs? If so, may I see a picture and get your opinion on how you like it on a Lycoming? Thanks! - Karl

I would say most of us use the star lock washers provided with exhaust system. Recheck torque at oil changes. No problems or loosening so far.

Yep, the description on ACS says for safety wire. The studs are a little over $11 each. It got me to thinking "who does this??" since I'm a star washer guy like everyone else I know.

I've never seen a safety wired exhaust flange stud either, always star washers.

The only catastrophic failures I've ever heard about at the exhaust flange have been where the pipe cracks away from the flange and the flange itself stays securely bolted to the cylinder head.
