A pilot and his passenger have been killed in a light plane crash at Mudgee Airport, in the New South Wales central west.

Witnesses have told the ABC the single engine two seater plane crashed into a paddock near Henry Lawson Drive while coming in to land on runway 04 about 11:00am (AEST).

Police say the pilot was aged in his 60s.

Paramedics tried to revive the female passenger, also aged in her 60s, but she died at the scene.

Police have cordoned off the area.

The crash site will be examined by specialist forensic officers and an investigation into the cause of the crash will be carried out by the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB).

Stuart Godley from the ATSB said police will guard the site overnight and two investigators will arrive there tomorrow morning.

"We don't really know what's happened at this stage," he said.

"All we know is that it is a small single engine aircraft, it's a Vans RV-6 and it's amateur built.

"That means it's been built by the owner, most likely the pilot."

A report will also be prepared for the coroner.

Oh NO!!!!

I'm so very sorry. My prayers go out to all their family & friends. May God Bless them...... so sad...

Final report is out.

Non-standard (low) circuit entry, slower than recommended approach speed and a steeper than required bank angle gave no room to recover when the engine failed due to suspected carb icing and the aircraft stalled in the turn.
