Bummer. I do recall a RV-4 or two losing canopy and landing safely (and one that didn't). Even if you don't fly with eyeglasses or shades consider some shades or safety glasses as backup in the cockpit to put on, in case you lose canopy.
Even professionals who are keyed up and ready for anything have trouble with it. Here's a short video from Reno this year where Carl Robinson lost his canopy during the race in Formula One, I watched this one happen.
