I'm New Here
I have an early 4 and I need to put an airfilter on because I have moved to a dusty area. I purchased the chin for the cowl and I read somewhere that someone had converted theirs and just attached the pick up to the cowl with twist locks. Does anyone know where I could get info on how to do it?

Welcome to VAF!!!!

Bill, welcome aboard VAF.

Good to have you here, enjoy.

Probably best to check with Vans for the filter, would be my guess.

The Air up there...

I used the stock early cowling and scoop as I built mine before the "FAB-4" :) The FAB scoop can easily be attached with fasteners but on many RV4's I have inspected, cracks generate around the fittings and the scoop just looks better faired in. Most have been permanently attached although if you could figure out a good way to make it work, it would make lower cowling access a piece of cake. Most Thorp T-18's have their intake scoops attached this way and it works great. Bill Freckman used this on his RV-4 fastback and it looks great. His thread is included in the link below with photos.
I manufactured my own ram-air scoop with alternate filter option for ground ops.
