Looks like a one of a kind. In the beginning there was no such thing as a "Van's Airbox" as it hadn't been developed yet. In fact, in the prototype RV-4, IIRC, there wasn't an air filter just ram air all the time. So whatever type of induction system you put on the plane you built from scratch with filter or without.

That looks like what you have - a one-off induction system design. If it works well there probably isn't a lot of reason to change it as you would probably have to modify the cowl to fit anything else.

Perhaps a little bit. The reasoning is that the newer style air box is designed to recover more air pressure to help overcome the loss through the filter and might therefore end up with a higher pressure at the throat of the carb. But will it work better than what you have? Hard to tell by just looking at it and the only real way to tell is by building one and comparing results.

The numbers of variables effecting the end result here are many so analytically determining which would be "better" is difficult if not impossible.
