<snip> Hope they make it.
They made it!
The new moniker is:
"The Nevada Bureau of Tourism National Championship Air Races"
That's what kicking in $600K to push it over the top gets ya!
I wouldn't fret commercialism though...heck, all the bowl game sponsors and stadium sponsors get that kind of recognition, and if allows the event to continue to bring in $85 mil to the community and the state, and it lets us do what we do, and see & hear what we all see & hear, then its all good, eh! It was always titled The National Championship Air Races, but of course always known simply as the Reno Air Races. Doubt that will change, and I don't see NBOT-NCAR sticking...though I'll wear the t-shirt if it lets us fly! Who knows, perhaps it will attract more sponsors in the future...not a bad thing, methinks.
Bottom Line, the races are ON!
There are at least 5 RVs/Rockets entered to date: Mark Frederick in his F1, Steve Senegal in his Super 8, Tim Cone in his 8, Dave Casey in his 3, and moi. There are some Lancair 360's, Glassair I's and Radial Rockets we'll be tangling with, so there should be some fun racing in our speed range in the Sport Class. We all hope you'll come out to cheer on the "Metal Mafia", which is what the really fast glass guys call the intrepid RVers and Rocketeers! (And yes, we have stickers!)
We'll be parked in the Sport Class Hangar across from the main RARA hangar (across from where the Bipes and Formula guys are). Please come visit, enjoy some shade...and some good hangar flying! We'll all be at the R3-BBQ too!
Here's a modified version of Greg's original photo showing some of the hot spots (including that Sport Class hangar). C-Ya there!!
Cheers,
Bob
