It's that time of year again and the crew will be putting on the annual R-cubed BBQ at the Reno Air Races. As in past years, it will be held on Saturday evening immediately following the last race of the day. Same location as in the past, Guccidude's hangar:

Please give us a heads up here on the forum if you think you might attend, so we can get supplies in approximately the right quantity.

Cheers,
Greg

My son & I from Atlanta & Florida will be there. Flying 6a to Truckee/Tahoe and staying at Silver Legacy. Monday before we will be staying at Moab to see Arches Natl Park & Milt's Diner!
Thanks for hosting an awsome event for RVers.

Check the notams, but I believe one of the runways at Truckee is out of service until after the air races event. Just a heads up. I will likely fly into TRK as well

The long runway is Notam'ed out. I believe it is 10-28.

The north-south (01/19) is open. Caution for glider tow, and glider ops.

So Greg,

I'm assuming that the Reno air races will actually happen?

Best,

At least that is the plan. From the air race web site:

The Reno Air Racing Association appreciates the tremendous encouragement we continue to receive from our friends, family and fans. We remain committed to holding the 49th annual National Championship Air Races this September and, as we move forward in planning, we still need your support. Our insurance premium alone has increased by $1.7 million and we must raise and pay for it by Sept. 1, 2012.

Hope they make it.

<snip> Hope they make it.

They made it!

The new moniker is:
"The Nevada Bureau of Tourism National Championship Air Races"

That's what kicking in $600K to push it over the top gets ya! ;)

I wouldn't fret commercialism though...heck, all the bowl game sponsors and stadium sponsors get that kind of recognition, and if allows the event to continue to bring in $85 mil to the community and the state, and it lets us do what we do, and see & hear what we all see & hear, then its all good, eh! It was always titled The National Championship Air Races, but of course always known simply as the Reno Air Races. Doubt that will change, and I don't see NBOT-NCAR sticking...though I'll wear the t-shirt if it lets us fly! Who knows, perhaps it will attract more sponsors in the future...not a bad thing, methinks.

Bottom Line, the races are ON! :D

There are at least 5 RVs/Rockets entered to date: Mark Frederick in his F1, Steve Senegal in his Super 8, Tim Cone in his 8, Dave Casey in his 3, and moi. There are some Lancair 360's, Glassair I's and Radial Rockets we'll be tangling with, so there should be some fun racing in our speed range in the Sport Class. We all hope you'll come out to cheer on the "Metal Mafia", which is what the really fast glass guys call the intrepid RVers and Rocketeers! (And yes, we have stickers!)

We'll be parked in the Sport Class Hangar across from the main RARA hangar (across from where the Bipes and Formula guys are). Please come visit, enjoy some shade...and some good hangar flying! We'll all be at the R3-BBQ too!

Thanks, Bob...if work slows down a little to where one airplane can handle all the cotton and peanuts, I'll be there. We've had a run like never before with all this year's rain.

Best,

Appealing

I haven't been there since 1987 but Bob Mills' identification of the super RVs and Rockets with people I actually know tends to make it personal. I assume that a person can just show up and buy a ticket but I will have to do a little more research. Thinking about it sitting here in my Urbana, OH motel room where I admit to being a little weary after yet another long non-stop trip from northwest Arkansas. the month long break between the race here in Urbana Ohio and the one in Pagosa Springsm CO late in September is not without its apeal as well. When we went in 1985 and 1987 it was part of a package deal that the organizer of our flying club fly-in there bought through a travel agent back when Steve Hinton was flying the Super Cousair, Art Sholl was flying his Chipmunk, Bob Hoover was flying his Commander, and Jimmy Franklin was Flying the Black Aerostar as Zorn and there were no jets. Exciting memories.

What about SECTION 3?

Race 43

Bob, you didn't draw an arrow for "SECTION 3!" Surely that is a HOT spot! I do have a "SECTION 3" tee shirt. I wore it at Airventure and only one person commented on it. ;) For those of you who don't know, you have to be there to "know" what SECTION 3 is!

Will be there

First time attending and client invited me :D
Will plan on attending and may bring the client if that is OK?

Pierre, I hope it works out that you can come out, so we can spend some more time at the races this year! Glad your season is going so well...good stuff!

Bob, you can buy a walk up ticket easily...but you won't need to if you're on my crew (offer's still open, and it's an easy job! ;)). Hang out and go to Pagosa on your way back to Arkansas!

Don, you're absolutely right...my bad! :) Section 3 is in one of the smaller/darker sets of bleachers to the right (in the picture) of the main grandstands (the first or second one, I believe). You know it when you see it...you can actually pick it out from the air with all the orange shirts (from cool-down, not from on the course ;)). It may also be the only section that you can hear with the engine running! :D The Metal Mafia also sports Section 3 stickers...rabid fans are the best! Both stickers are F1Boss brainchilds, and provided courtesy of our buddy Vince Frazier!

Greg, Dan, Mike and Co throw a pretty dog-gone great BBQ too! A sunset to the west and a ramp full of Warbirds (and more) to the east...doesn't get much better 'n dat! :)

Cheers,
Bob

I'll be there, where should I stay?

I am flying in a 2 ship for the F-16 static display. I've never been to Reno, any suggestions on where to stay? If my cross country approval gets pulled at the last second (got to love the USAF budget these days) I will fly there in my RV-8.

Been waiting all year for Reno!!

Greg,
My friend John and I from Victoria B.C. will be at the races again and had a great time at your BBQ in 2011. Count us in!!

Casey,

Lots of big hotels downtown - try CircusCircus, Eldorado, Silver Legacy or Nugget (in Sparks). Any of the internet engines will give you a lot of options. I'm sure the rates will be higher for the event (they always go up for any sort of event in town), but there should be rooms available. Many of the bigger hotels have shuttles that will go out to the airport, and that is probably a better deal than driving and trying to park and walk ($$). There are no places to stay that are anywhere near walking distance to the airport.

Cheers,
Greg

Quick Reminder for the Reno RV Rendezvous BBQ and cheap beer. The racers have arrived and are in the process of tuning the motors and FAMing the course. Remember, the BBQ is immediately after the last heat on Saturday, 15 Sep at my hangar, MA-7. I'm looking for a final head count to buy beer. Dan

+ 1 Thanks for putting this on Greg, met you in 2010, missed last year. Pm me if you need any help food or beer stuff.
