Free broadcast weather data is rolling out across the USA (ADS-B). How challenging would it be to roll your own reciever and get the data into some kind of usuable display?

It looks like there are ground based hams building recievers to track ADS-B transmissions from aircraft. Here is a link.

An in flight weather version would be 978 mhz and listen to ground stations rather than aircraft.

I know about the commercial offerings, but the thought occured to me, there is room enough for commercial and roll your own solutions, case in point being SPOT versus APRS for aircraft tracking.

Thoughts?
