I am wondering if it is possible to switch out the landing gear on an 8 for the rocket type gear. In addition, if that were possible, would that eliminate what appears to be the gear housing thats right about calf high down there?
Has anyone done this?

Short answer is: "Not really."

It's been done at least once that I've seen, but it was a tremendous amount of extra work. The plane (a stock -8 fuse) required custom weldments between the firewall and gear towers for the gear sockets. The gear towers remained intact. The motor mount and firewall forward were stock.

The firewall on the -8 is farther forward relative to the CG than on the rocket or an RV-4. This means that gear sockets integrated into the motor mount would require too much aft sweep to be practical.
