I am planning to run an FS1-14B as my main alternator in my RV-4 (day VFR only).

When I installed it on my engine I noticed that the lead has the field wire to pin 3, a jumper from pin 3 to pin 2, but unlike any of the belt driven Plane Power alternators I have seen, there is no lead from pin 1 to drive a low voltage light.

Does anyone know if pin 1 will provide this function? I have emailed PlanePower, been redirected to Hartzell, but so far no reply.

Thanks

Chris

Most Plane Power alternators have two wires coming from the unit, a red for field that connects to two pins as you describe, then a white from the third point that offers ground if the alternator fails. Is yours internally regulated?

Yes, internally regulated. Pin 1, which is where the low volt signal would come from, is empty ie no white wire.

Yes, it'll drive a fail light - at least my 2014 era model does.

Expect it to be considerably flickery, especially at low RPM. Suggest using an incandescent light or a power resistor in parallel to an LED.
