Hello All !

I had a major electrical issue when my stock alternator failed to high voltage.

I had to make an emergency landing and subsequently get some repairs done (thank you Justin Spence at Ultimate Aircraft Services in Tennessee and thank you Klaus for the loaner P3 - that I am sending back today)

I still have some repairs to do (voltage converter and auto pilot).

But, right now, I have a new alternator from Plane Power and its noisy.

There is a lot of head set whine that was not there before.

Any ideas on how I can eliminate that ?

Thanks in advance,

Scott

Assuming the old alternator did not whine prior to the alternator over voltage issue, does the possibility exist that the over voltage caused damage to some other components that you have yet to discover, such as the audio panel, powered headsets, etc?

I would start with inspecting the ground system in the aircraft. Could be a ground loop resulting from multiple ground points. Some things to check....

Does the engine have a ground strap across the engine mounts?

Does the engine have a good ground to the battery or main ground points?

Were the avionics grounded to a central ground when the aircraft was built?

Are the headset jacks isolated from the airframe ground with fiber washers as they should be?

Is this whine a continuous wine or does it just occur when large current draws from the alternator, such as charging a depleted battery?

Just a few ideas. Maybe find an avionics tech to help you isolate the issue.

There was a whine before with the old alternator, but it was minor.

In this case, it seems to dissipate at high RPM. Its loudest at idle taxi.

I have a G900X panel and one COMM is out due to a burned out 28V step up converter (I hope that's all it is)
