Just a quick question. I am ready to close up my first wing and seriously questioning whether to follow plans which call for 7/16" hole in flange of spar or to make a doubler plate of some sort and install Van's pitot tube in skin just behind spar flange. I'm wondering if extra hole will have any effect on the strength of the spar. Tnx Tim

Tim, I say this tounge-in-cheek... I hope you see the irony in your question. You are asking if "following the plans" will be strong enough. I bet I know what Van's would say if you asked them. :D

I see where you are going with this, but I am just having a little friendly fun... sorry. ;) :)

When in boubt, follow the recommendations of the designer, in this case, the plans!

I made my own plate and used a different pitot / static pickup. I only had to drill 2 extra #40 holes. Food for thought.
