I know there is a thread on here on the Earth X replacement for the PC680. The search function pulls up but wont let me enter anything before it disappears. Anyway, looking at the Earth X ETX680 as a replacement for my PC680, 40 amp alt, O-360-A2A. Thoughts? Better Earth X options? Live in MT to CCA is important. Heat issues?

Cheers,

Kurt

No recommendations because my airplane hasn't flown yet, but I did buy a cheap PC680 size AGM battery off Amazon for the testing and configuration of the electronics. My plan is to replace it when or if it fails.

My phone does that too. Click on Search then "Advanced".
It will open a box with tons of options.

Thumbs Up EarthX

I am EXTREMELY happy with EarthX 900 - take the worry away from hot starts with plenty of juice to get you through tough spots.

I'm very happy with my ETX680. Two hours' work swapping out the PC6800 and my airplane lost 10 lbs.

Were it that easy for the pilot to do the same...

Thank you for this thread ! I didn't know how much my batteries weighed and after reading this thread I went to find out. WOW WOW WOW !!!:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:

This is more of a learning exercise because my batteries are working great but I'm always looking to learn more and for future use.

My current batteries are two PC1200 12v (each 37.8 pounds & $316) in series for my 24v system for a total of 75.6 pounds. I can lose over 65 pounds just by changing the batteries and the prices aren't too far off of what mine cost right now.

The EarthX ETX680 is 4.1 pounds each & $379
The EarthX ETX900 is 4.9 pounds each & $449

My alternator is a ALX-8521 LS which is 24v / 70amps

Can I buy two 680s or do I need to buy two 900s due to the 70 amp alternator?

I could buy a 24v EarthX ETX900-24 but it's $899 so basically still the same cost as two 12v batteries.

Search tip

The search function pulls up but wont let me enter anything before it disappears.
Pro tip: use google search e.g. site:vansairforce.net earthx pc680. Works far better than the built-in search, in my experience.

Here's the official word from EarthX about putting the 12v batteries in series

Kept PC680 for its weight

In addition to cost, the other reason I stayed with the PC680 is that its weight on the firewall helped with weight & balance in my -7A with a carbureted O-360 and Sensenich metal prop.
