I tried painting my canopy frame flat black with automotive spray paint (spray can) and it scrapes off very easily. i had sanded the frame until all the shine was gone then cleaned it with laquer thinner to get rid of any grease then sprayed. Looks good but it will be too easily damaged. Any ideas short of powder coating it again?

I Andrew,, I had done this myself with auto yellow. Was very durable and only finally came off when I soaked everything is thinner. I'm going back to the Van's off white to match my Harvard 2 paint scheme.

Epoxy primer

Sanding and an epoxy primer for a mechnical grip might be the way to go before the finish coat...

I painted all my interior powder coated parts (sticks, rudder pedals, flap tube, canopy latch rod, etc) by scuff sanding with 120, cleaning with acetone and shooting 2 coats of S-W polyurethane. Absolutely bulletproof after 3+ years.
